After revisiting our notes, it’s a bit of a shame that we read this book back in mid-August last year and even recorded the podcast, only to delay its release due to various circumstances. But now, we’re finally able to share both the notes and the podcast with you! We hope you enjoy them as much as we did.
Ercan Kesal is a multi-talented figure — a renowned actor, director, writer, and even a doctor. Most notably, he is remembered for his standout role in the iconic scene from Once Upon a Time in Anatolia Beyond this, Kesal has appeared in numerous soap operas and films, and he’s also the author of nine books.
On this book, Ercan Kesal had dialogues and conversations mit Yenal Bilgici who is a journalist and well known writer in Turkey. The book has 7 chapters and in each chapter you go into a different world of thoughts with lots of anecdotes from Kesal. Actually, one of the chapter(4) is called – The words which can not be translated to other languages – more explaining the power of living the language and now I can not tranlate that how it is a great “sohbet” was this book.

First of all, it is not a chronologic book that you follow a timeline of Kesal, more conversations on each chapter about life with many nice anecdotes… For example, he is originally a doctor and always trying to go out of his standart life to search and reach new destinations…While he is a regular doctor, he is establishing a hospital and since he is keen on cinema always trying to reach out famous directors, cultural pivots whom he might learn and step forward.
In another chapter, Kesal, reflecting on his Turkish identity, expresses a deep sense of insecurity that many Europeans might not fully grasp. He also touches on his financial concerns, which I found to be very relatable, as it felt like speaking with someone I know personally.
One of the interesting things about him is that he wakes up(not always) at midnight to focus on the work or tasks he would like to finish and he is stating that this is the only time he can listen himself forthe any creativity needed work.
The book is easy to read, written in clear Turkish, and includes great lists of recommended movies and books from both Turkish and international cultures. We really enjoyed the book and highly recommend it — 100%.

Geçen yıl Ağustos’ta okuduğumuz ve hatta podcast’ini de hazırladığımız bir başka kitabı, 6 ay sonra, geç de olsa yayımlayabiliyoruz. Maalesef hayat ve iş koşuşturması derken, her ne kadar okumayı aksatsak da okuduklarımızı en azından paylaşmaya çalışıyoruz. Bununla birlikte, bir kitabımız daha var ve umarım kısa zamanda onu da yayımlamış oluruz.
Ercan Kesal, oyuncu, yazar, doktor… ve bana sorarsanız süper bir muhtar :):) Nuri Bilge Ceylan‘ın Bir Zamanlar Anadolu filmini izlediğim zaman birçok sahne aklımda kalmıştı ancak “Köy Muhtarı” sahnesi (yukarıda videosunu bıraktık) sanırım en sevdiklerimden biri olarak kaldı. Neyse, Ercan Kesal’ı tanımam aslında bu filmle oldu diyebiliriz. Sonrasında YouTube’dan İdris Koçavalı’ya hayat vermesi, sesindeki tokluk, filmleri, kitapları derken kendisini bu kitapla daha da yakından tanıma fırsatı bulduk.
Kitap, Yenal Bilgici ve Ercan Kesal’in hayata,sinemaya ve bize dokunan daha bir çok konuya değindikleri bir söyleşi. Yenal Bilgici özellikle Vedat Milor ve İlber Ortaylı gibi ufku geniş insanlarla yaptığı söyleşilerle bilinen ve okuma listemizde bulunan “Memlekette Tuhaf Zamanlar” kitabının yazarı, gazeteci çok yönlü bir insan. Hatta ekşi sözlükte şöylebir yorum tam yerine oturmuş.
Kitap yedi bölümden oluşuyor ve her bölüm, farklı bir dünyaya, farklı bir yöne açılıyor.

Kitabı okurken Ercan Kesal’ın bizden biri olduğunu — aileden biri — ve ne kadar mütevazı olduğunu açıkça görebiliyorsunuz. Mesela, oğlunun aslında ne kadar zorluklarla karşılaşması gerektiğini ama ona da her ana-baba gibi konforlu bir alan sunduğunu tatlılıkla bahsediyor. Ya da İstanbul’a geldiğinde işsiz oluşu ve kitaptaki tabiriyle “…hayatta kalmaktan başka çaren yok” deyişi, hepimizi hatırlatıyor.
Bir o kadar sinemaya tutkun, sinema ile iç içe ve bu alana girebilmek için çabalamış. Doktor olarak İstanbul’a geliyor ve burada tutunmak için elinden geleni yapıyor, hastane sahibi oluyor, yetmiyor, doktoraya başlıyor…
Kitapta birçok isimle ilgili notlar aldım, özellikle yerli ve yabancı kitap ve sinema listesi çok güzeldi. Kitaptan biz çok zevk aldık ve okurken yine bizden birini bulmak, ufkumuzu genişletmek güzeldi. Memnuniyetle okumanızı tavsiye ediyoruz.
