Ülker’in Global Yolculuğu

Ülker is one of the biggest food manufacturers in Turkey and recently they had changed their strategy to become a universal player in the snacks category. The book is mainly covering the path Ülker followed from the foundation till today. Actually Mr. Ateş makes a nice summary of the history that Ülker passed and as well he has many observations about Murat Ülker who is running the whole family business today. 

I like these kind of books since it is a written document for the valuable assets of the industry and it reflects all past experiences to future. I have seen books about IBM, McDonalds, Nike, Apple… and this time it is about a local hero and leader of an industry in Turkey. I hope these books will be increased in the future to keep the memory of corporate companies to the next generations.

The book starts with basic history of the company and mainly focusing on Sabri Ülker(founder and father of Murat Ülker) and how he started to the business from a simple production of  biscuits and how they are grown rapidly till 90`s. The second part is more focusing on the Pladis which is newly established company under main group and which is mainly focusing on snack category all over the world. Ülker had significant acquisitions such as Godiva, United Biscuits… and now they are focusing to be a global leader on the snacks category to compete against giants like Mondelez… In the second part, you can find the strategy, vision-mission and all related info regarding Pladis. This part seems a bit weak and repetative for me due to content. For example, it was simply explained how the performance measured , feedback is given… these are the common things in all corporate companies and not unique to Pladis. 

In the 3rd and 4th part it is mainly focused on leadership of  Ülkers and anectodes from their business life. For example, in one of the speeches Sabri Ü. advices his son that if he had studied too much, he might perform another task as a break. Also follow up with tasks, ownership of a topic of Sabri Ü. in on the higher level that proves how an entreprenuer should be.

In general, apart from repeated parts, I like the book. It is focused with a good order and easy to read.

En sonda söyleyeceğimi başta belirteyim, Türkiye’de faaliyet gösteren ve aslında sektörün hafızası niteliğinde olan firmaların hikayeleri hep ilgimi çekiyor  ve bu tür kitapların da hafızanın kaybolmaması adına bir değer olduğunu düşünüyorum. Bu nedenle öncelikle Rauf Ateş’in eline sağlık. Kitap adından da anlaşılacağı üzere Ülker’in son yıllardaki değişimini de kapsayarak geçmişten gelceğe nasıl bir yol çizerek gelindiğini anlatıyor.

Eser, klasik bir söyleşi ya da soru cevap şeklinde değil.Aksine, medyada yer alan bilgilerin, Murat Ülker’le zaman zaman yapılan birlikteliklerin bir sentezi olarak düşünülebilir. İlk kısımlarda Ülker’in geçmişten ve özellikle Sabri Ülker’le olan yıllarından 90’lara kadar nasıl geldiklerinden bahsedilmiş. İkinci kısımda ise yeniden yapılandırma ile oluşturulan Pladis isimli atıştırmalık kategorisinde odaklanılan şirketin yapısı, vizyonu ve nasıl bir işleyişli yönetildiği anlatılmış.

Genel olarak kitapta tekrarlar göze çarpıyor ama ikinci bölüm özellikle kurumsal yaşamın gerektirdiği işleyişleri anlatması bakımından biraz boğabilir. 3. ve 4. kısımlarda ise daha çok Ülker’lerin liderliği, nasıl bir yönetim izledikleri anektodlarla anlatılmış.

Aldığım notlardan hoşuma giden bir kaç noktayı da paylaşmak istiyorum ;

• “Kararsızlık, geç karar verme, bocalama; bir yöneticinin, bir liderin en büyük düşmanıdır” M. Ülker
• “Siz sayfalarca kitabı okuyup öğrenene kadar ben yapıyorum” M.Ülker
• Murat Üker yaşamının yaklaşık %20’lik kısmını yaşam ve hobilere ayırıyor

Kitabı konuların sıralanış şekli ve ilgili detayda yer verilmesi, metinlerin anlaşılr ve net oluşu bakımından beğendim. En azınan yeni şeyler öğrendim ve hafızayı tutma anlamında da bu tür kitapların çoğalmasını diliyorum.
