Tel Dolaptaki Karpuz

Artun Ünsal is a famous gourmet and writer who was also representative of Le Monde and Le Journal de Geneve. He has written lots of books about special areas of food such as simit, cheese, olive oil, restaurants in Turkey. This book is a bit different than this concept, in his book he is sharing his memoirs with us to taste old İstanbul and anecdotes of different parts of life.

First of all, it is an easy read both in terms of length and as well the language point of view. I like the parts in the beginning where he was sharing anecdotes from İstanbul and his life since we were also living at the same places and it was really nice to see his view with 40-50yrs before.

The last chapters were too boring and it didn’t satisfy me. I had a look on my notes and already marked 6-7 chapters as not satisfied status.

One of the interesting points in the book for me, he visited Afghanistan once he was a child and it seems really interesting to see Middle East from his eyes. First they (with his father) went to Baghdad with a train and they fly from there to Karachi. From Karachi to Peshawar with a train and finally from there to Kabul with a bus.

On the way back, he was alone and used the route Kabul ->Tehran ->Beırut -> Istanbul. When I compare with my childhood, it was really amazing to hear such journeys.

Overall I liked the book and apart from the chapters I get bored , it was totally fine.

Artun Ünsal‘ın okuduğum ilk kitabı, aslında yoğurt, simit, zeytin, peynir, ekmek… alanlarında kitapları var ama ben biraz daha kolaya kaçıp hatırat niteliğinde olan bu kitabı okudum.

Dili öncelikle sizi hiç yormuyor, gereksiz tasvirler,ağdalı ve uzun cümleler yok. Anılarını kısa kısa bölümler halinde anlatması da okumayı daha bir kolaylaştırıyor. 147 sayfalık kitap 20 bölüme ayrılmış ve her bir bölümde başka bir hikayeyi anlatıyor Artun Ünsal. 

Kısa kısa bölümlere değinmek gerekirse, kitabın ilk yarısı sanki çocukluk yılları, hayatının belli bölümlerinden kesitler gibi olsa da ikinci yarısı daha çok anlık hatıratlardan seçilmiş parçalar gibi. Yani ilk bölümlerde İstanbul Göztepe’deki yaşamından, Kabil’e ailesiyle nasıl gittiğinden, askerlik sırasındaki Kıbrıs gözlemlerinden bahsetmiş daha çok. Sonraki bölümlerde ise daha anlık, Galatasaray Üniversitesi’nin yanışı, tanıdık bir lokanta sahibi ile dostluğu, her zaman uğrak yeri olan pastaneyi… tatlı bir dille anlatmış.

İkinci bölümde özellikle 6-7 bölüm maalesef çok sıkıcı geldi ve notlarımda sıkıcı diye belirterek geçmişim.

Kitabın gerek yazım dili gerekse geçmişi çok güzel anlatması nedeniyle beğendim, kısa ve okumasi hoş bir kitap….
